Berry and Flower Pond Plants

Crabapples
Crabapple trees have attractive pink or white flowers, as well as red fruit that can attract birds.

The following plants provide two seasons of beauty by producing vibrant flowers then bearing fruit that will attract birds. Choose from various groundcover, shrubs and trees to enhance the lush growth around your pond or water garden.

Groundcover
Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) – White flowers, dark red berries, Zones 4 to 7
Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) – Small bell-shaped white or pink flowers, large red berries, Zones 2 to 6
Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster spp.) – Pink or white flowers, red berries, Zones 5 to 8
Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis) – Showy dogwoodlike flowers, bright red berries, Zones 2 to 9

Shrubs
Viburnum (Viburnum spp.) – White or light pink flowers, blue-black berries, Zones 2 to 8
Beautyberry (Callicarpa dichotoma) – Pinkish-purple flowers, purple berries, Zones 5 to 8
Oregon grape holly (Mahonia aquifolium) – Yellow flowers, grapelike fruit, Zones 5 to 9
Flowering quince (Chaenomeles speciosa) – Pink flowers, small fruit, Zones 5 to 9
Elderberry (Sambucus spp.) – White flowers, dark blue fruit, Zones 4 to 7
Hypericum (Hypericum spp.) – Yellow flowers, red berries, Zones 5 to 8

Trees
Crabapple (Malus spp.) – Pink or white flowers, orange-red to dark red fruit, Zones 4 to 9
Fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus) – White flowers, blue-black fruit, Zones 3 to 9
Flowering plums (Prunus spp.) – Pink or white flowers, plums smaller than those sold for produce, Zones 5 to 8
Dogwoods (Cornus spp.) – White, pink or red flowers, red berries, Zones 5 to 9
Serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis) – Small white flowers, red to dark purple fruit, Zones 4 to 7
Washington Hawthorne (Crataegus viridis) – White flowers, Zones 4 to 8, orange-red fruit
Sweetbay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana) – Creamy white flowers, red berry clusters, Zones 5 to 9
